Month: September 2016

September in Review

September was a great month for SNPhA.

School is back in full swing and with it so are SNPhA events.

This semester we have already had many recruitment events, education events, and service events.

Some highlights:

Right as August ended we had Senate Carnival. Our members had a table to introduce the organization to PY1s and other interested students.

We did blood pressure, glucose screenings, and disseminated hypertension prevention and awareness materials at Unity in the Community Day which took place at the NC State Fairgrounds. This event is one of several in our partnership with C.A.A.R.E, Inc. of Durham. There were also several other patient care events this month.

Blood Glucose and Blood Pressure Trainings

The students became the teachers during these training sessions. PY2s and PY3s flexed their skills to teach PY1s how to perform blood glucose and blood pressure testing. These events were through our partnership with CAPS.

SNPhA Membership: What does it mean to you?

20160910_182744

As we are closing our recruitment period- it is a wonderful time to ask members the questions: Why did you join SNPhA? What does SNPhA mean to you?

Because they are awesome, some of our members took the time to answer these questions for me.

img_8351 I joined SNPhA because I wanted to learn how to serve the underserved as a student pharmacist. To me, being a healthcare professional means ensuring that everyone has access to high quality, affordable care— SNPhA’s leaders and members constantly strive to address the ever-changing needs of an ever-changing national community, and I have learned so much about how pharmacists can contribute to positive health outcomes through clinical practice and patient education. — Kelly Hu, SNPhA President, PY3

11001614_927986437226051_4721567580763862022_o I joined SNPhA originally because at my undergraduate university, SNPhA played a huge role in recruiting pre-pharmacy students into volunteering events and fun socials. As time passed however, SNPhA became a second family… It’s helped me develop as a professional student, and has refined my interpersonal and clinical skills. — Erin Wei, Historian, PY3

12916324_10153954073965552_6837655245603294707_o I joined SNPhA after being overwhelmed with all of the organizations and alphabet soup of pharmacy school. I was intimidated by the older students but I felt really welcomed by the PY3s in SNPhA at that time and felt like they really wanted to hear my opinions when I worked with them for projects and committees. — Yue Dong, PY4

13724876_10153883961793512_5670346423868797954_o I joined SNPhA because of the diverse people and personalities that make up our local UNC chapter. I have gotten to meet a lot of interesting individuals not only on the local level but nationally as well. I have been able to expand my pharmaceutical network while serving the underserved. SNPhA to me means helping those who may not always be able to help themselves. It is caring for the less fortunate in your community while getting to implement the clinical skills we are learning in pharmacy school. — Patrick Kurunwune, PY2, Pharmacy Council Representative

1014698_10154875965070424_2046526647789621795_o I joined SNPhA because it is growing organization that is concerned with the progression of the pharmacy profession, the diversity in the profession, and the access and quality of care for underserved populations. SNPhA provides opportunities for students to give back to the community and gain an array of skills that are valuable in their educational, professional, and personal lives. SNPhA provides the opportunity to see healthcare through so many different lenses. The encouraged diversity and community-based experiences provides students with an opportunity to become culturally competent and better equipped to best serve patients of all backgrounds. —Darryl Lewis, National President-Elect, PY2
